Special Interest Groups

Special Interest Groups are open to all members of the society.
Guests are welcome to attend one meeting before becoming a member.

Irish Research Group

This group meets the second Monday of every month (except May and December) at 10am. For now we are meeting at the FamilySearch Center, where we have access to the John Gresham website (and others), and several computer monitors are available for the group to use.

The purpose of this group is to help members with the advancement of their research in Irish Genealogy. We explore a variety of resources and tools, such as the Ireland XO website, Ireland Reaching Out, Facebook groups and several books and publications.

Kathy “Cookie” Boone is the organizer, contact her for any questions at cookie48@mlode.com or 209-770-3379.

Writers' Group

The TCGS Writers’ Group would like to extend an invitation to anyone who has a story to tell about their family history. Whether it’s figuring out what to do with several year’s worth of genealogy research or just sharing your favorite story about a grandparent or a quirky great-uncle, we can help you get started and get that history recorded!

We are very good at helping people discover that you don’t have to be a “writer” to tell a family story and that the only wrong way to tell it is not to tell it at all. We inspire and support one another, share genealogy and writers’ resources and act as a sounding board to each other’s stories, all in a relaxed, informal, brown-bag-lunch environment.

We meet the second Monday of every month at 12:00PM (except May and December) in the Sonora Main Library Community Room. Please join us. We look forward to seeing you and hearing your story!

Find-A-Grave Group

The Find-A-Grave Group does not have regular monthly meetings, but instead offers field days to work in local Tuolumne County cemeteries.

On field days, participants will have the opportunity to help catalog, photograph, and update the records in the Find-A-Grave database.

The recent field day at Chinese Camp Cemetery was a great success. Weed eating, leaf raking, stone cleaning and numerous graves were documented by the LDS adults and young adults. Our ladies increased the gps count by 8%. The cemetery is now at 50%. We also added 7 new stones.

We are going  to try any other cemetery partnership in the fall.
